Ownership: Founded in New Delhi in August 1998 by two veterans of the 1988 uprising and registered in Myanmar in 2012, the first exile outlet to return. Led since its founding by chairman, managing director and editor-in-chief Soe Myint. A separate Mizzima Foundation was incorporated in Myanmar in 2017. No corporate, party or state shareholder is identified; the current registration of the news operation is not published.

Funding: Donor dependent, on an annual budget reported at around two million US dollars, with about five percent self-generated. United States government funding previously supplied 20 to 30 percent and was frozen in January 2025; European governments, United Nations agencies and the embassies of Sweden, Poland and Luxembourg have been named as supporters, and Sweden ended all Myanmar media funding in July 2026.
