## About

Citizen Digital carries the reach of Kenya's most-watched newsroom, the online face of a broadcaster nearly nine in ten Kenyans trust. It moves fast across politics, business and sport, yet its muscle is also political: it belongs to a media empire whose election-night tallies have drawn accusations of taking sides. When the state pulled live protest coverage, Citizen's signal was among the first cut, a reminder of how much reach can rattle power.

## Profile

- **Ownership:** Owned by Royal Media Services, Kenya's largest private broadcaster, founded and controlled by businessman Samuel Kamau Macharia.
- **Funding:** Commercial; advertising-funded and privately held, with no state funding.
- **Focus areas:** Breaking news, politics, business, sports, and entertainment.

## What the position means

TOLD classifies what an outlet publishes over time, based on ownership, funding
and focus. It describes a pattern; it is not a rating of quality and not a
ranking. Nothing in TOLD sorts, hides or promotes a source by its position.
State-aligned and partisan outlets are in the catalogue on purpose, labelled.
