# About TOLD

## Every newsroom tells the world from somewhere

TOLD shows the same story side by side, told by hundreds of news sources from
around the world, across countries, languages and editorial traditions.

## The same event. Four different headlines

Word choice and emphasis differ from newsroom to newsroom. TOLD puts those
differences side by side. Every headline links to the newsroom that published it.

## Framing isn't the problem. Seeing only one is

Every newsroom frames a story from an angle. That is journalism, not a flaw. The
trouble begins where one frame is all you ever see. The Brief gathers the stories
the world's press told most widely today and puts every telling underneath. The
Perspective takes the most covered story of the moment and sets the angles next
to each other.

## Every headline here has a newsroom behind it

Every source on TOLD is a working newsroom with editorial responsibility. It is
named. Its country, its owner and the year it started are on the page. If it gets
something wrong, there is someone who can correct it, and someone who answers for
it. An anonymous feed works the other way.

Every source profile carries four fields:

- **Country** — where the newsroom is based, and the language it publishes in.
- **Ownership** — who owns the outlet, and how the work is funded.
- **Founded** — how long the newsroom has been publishing.
- **Position** — where its editorial line sits, from independent to state aligned.

## Every story shows how many told it, and how many did not

TOLD counts the newsrooms that reported a story against every newsroom it reads.
Both numbers are on the page. Filter a story by region and see whether anyone
there reported it; if nobody did, the page says so. The number of newsrooms TOLD
reads in a region is always shown next to the silence, because silence in a
region we read widely means something different from silence in one we barely
read at all.

## A story doesn't end when it leaves your feed

Ongoing follows long-running stories as timelines, one day at a time, so a single
thread holds the first report and the latest one. Newsstream runs underneath all
of it: every headline TOLD reads, in the order it arrived, around the clock.

## Editorial principles

1. Mirror, don't judge — TOLD reflects what the press reports.
2. Descriptive, never loaded language.
3. No conclusions — readers compare sources themselves.
4. Source classification is structural (ownership, funding, focus), not moral.
5. All perspectives belong — including state-aligned and partisan media,
   transparently labelled.
6. TOLD is an experiment in reading across borders, not a verdict on the press.

## Where TOLD stops

TOLD does not rate truth, rank sources by quality, hide outlets, or tell readers
what to conclude. Voting on sources happens in the TOLD app, never on the web.
